Does this sound familiar?

We knew that school staff burnout was a problem long before the pandemic hit. Ever since then, it’s safe to say that most of us have been operating in survival mode.

As a school leader, you’re noticing:

  • Increasing teacher and staff stress and plummeting resilience, affecting morale, engagement and staff and student wellbeing
  • Growing staff shortages and attrition, burdening the staff who remain
  • A fading school culture, strained relationships and overwhelmed staff
  • Declining enthusiasm towards your strategic goals and the profession, impacting student academic results and/or school performance
  • Growing pressure to demonstrate compliance with psychosocial safety obligations, and no clear, practical pathway for how to do it

As a result, you’re frustrated that the initiatives you’ve implemented in the past don’t appear to be making much of a difference. You may be beginning to worry or doubt your decisions as a leader, as you’re concerned about the impact all of this will have on your people, students and community.

It’s time to try something different!

Your staff hold the solution for unlocking what to do next…

While most teacher and staff wellbeing approaches are well-intentioned, they don’t address the root cause of staff stress, burnout or dissatisfaction. It’s not as easy as thinking that it’s just that people need to be more resilient or that it’s the individual’s responsibility to improve their wellbeing.

Staff acknowledge that the leaders’ efforts are well-intended, but they generally aren’t making the enduring changes needed or getting to the heart of the issues.

For example … Planning after-work drinks when staff are tired and overwhelmed, or sending more emails when all they want is more consultation on issues that impact them, doesn’t make any difference.

The unintended result? Frustrations continue to bubble, dissatisfaction lingers, and your school environment becomes tense from the lack of progress.

Schools DON’T need another wellbeing initiative.

They need a structured process to understand what is actually happening, identify the hazards that pose risk, and build a response that is both evidence-based and practically deliverable.

Now, imagine if you had all the information you need to better support staff wellbeing, improve culture and morale, and enhance school performance

What if in just one week, you could understand your staff’s perspectives, assess the school’s culture and begin to make enduring and demonstrable changes. Without the guess-work and all the trial and error. Just data backed decisions that you’re confident will make a difference.

Here’s the secret…

The simplest way to understand what teachers and school staff need to support their wellbeing is to ASK them.

Collaborating with all staff on the process of change and involving them every step of the way will allow your school culture to flourish in a way that benefits the entire school community.

Survey Sections

Our editable 80+ question Teacher and Staff Wellbeing Survey is grouped into five sections to provide expert and targeted insights into your staff's views, opinions, and wellbeing needs:

Section 1

Assess staff's personal wellbeing

How are your teachers and staff actually doing?

This section measures individual staff health across physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, stress, resilience and coping.

It gives you a personal wellbeing baseline and helps identify how many staff are operating under strain before we even look at workplace conditions.

Section 2

Identify staff burnout risk

Who is at risk, and how do you know?

Staff don’t always identify as burned out even when they are exhibiting multiple burnout indicators.

This section is designed to surface that gap. It measures exhaustion, cynicism, cognitive difficulty, physical stress symptoms and reduced efficacy, giving you an early warning system, not just a snapshot.

Section 3

Assess staff stressors, psychosocial hazards and risks

Where are the hazards, and how severe are they?

This is the psychosocial risk assessment at the heart of the survey. Staff rate the impact of workplace stressors across six hazard categories aligned to the Safe Work Australia Code of Practice.

Each stressor is rated from No Impact to Severe Impact, giving you severity-weighted risk data, not just a checklist.

This is the distinction between knowing a hazard exists and knowing how urgently it needs to be addressed.

Section 4

Reveal perceptions of school and leadership processes

Do the right conditions exist for psychosocial safety?

This section assesses whether the structures, practices and culture required for psychosocial safety are in place.

Questions explore staff involvement in decision-making, awareness of reporting processes, leadership role-modelling, wellbeing action planning and staff engagement.

Data in this section provides scope and next steps for school improvement.

Section 5

Gather reflections and suggestions for improvement

The final section captures staff’s overall perception of school culture, their sense of psychosocial safety, whether they would recommend their school as a great place to work and their concrete suggestions for improvement.

This section includes your most important headline-tracking metrics for year-on-year progress and invites staff consultation and feedback on wellbeing initiatives and enhancements.

Excelling staff data after just 12-months!

“Our return survey results evidenced growth way beyond my expectations over a 12-month period.”

“Adrienne’s survey and tools, alongside follow-up reporting have opened a whole new perspective, for both my staff and I, on staff wellbeing as being the responsibility of the collective.

Her independent and empathetic ear, partnered with her research, expertise and on-the-ground awareness, has been embraced by the entire staff.  Our return survey results evidenced growth way beyond my expectations over a 12-month period.

Create your wellbeing strategy with staff insights

“We have made considerable progress in the way we support staff wellbeing.”

“Adrienne’s data-driven approach is underpinned by a school scan, which provided us with an evidence-informed base, upon which we could make informed decisions about our specific situation, identifying areas of strength and areas requiring attention.

The staff survey formed an important part of this evidence base. The survey is very in-depth and, at times, direct. The responses provided by staff gave clarity around how they felt about specific aspects of their wellbeing.  With this information and Adrienne’s guidance, we developed a wellbeing plan aligned to the findings of the school scan and survey.

We recently re-surveyed our staff after 12 months of working on our identified focus areas. Our data is positive, indicating improvement in staff perception of how the school supports wellbeing. This is consistent with the executive team’s evaluation.”

About Me

As a school leader (and teacher!), I was once unhappy, overworked and burnt out. And when I looked around me, I could see I wasn’t alone in my struggles. My fellow colleagues were drowning under the high stress, immense workload and heavy expectations of their role.

By prioritising my own health and wellness, I started to feel healthier, happier and more engaged at work. This was when I realised that by looking after myself, I was better able to look after my people. Using the lessons I learned on my own wellbeing journey, I transformed  the way I led my staff,  making their wellbeing a priority and creating positive team environments year after year.

This shift in focus made me a fierce advocate for staff wellbeing in schools. It’s my mission to help schools put their people first to build more positive staff and school cultures.

Now, I partner with school leaders and their staff across Australia to collect the crucial  data they need  to build and embed a tailored ‘Staff Wellbeing Action Plan’ for their school.

Each school’s plan is aimed at nurturing a positive school environment and addressing teacher and staff burnout, so that they can improve their school’s outcomes and performance.

First, you’ll administer our user-friendly survey to quantify the staff who are thriving, struggling and/or requiring additional support. But it doesn’t stop there. “With her guidance and support, we feel confident sharing the data with staff and working with our staff to create a common language and approach to managing our key stresses.”

We began working with Adrienne Hornby earlier this year when our staff identified the need for an anonymous survey about staff wellbeing. The Staff Wellbeing Survey gave us a great opportunity to really identify the key factors impacting staff.

The very detailed and descriptive report we received from Adrienne Hornby Consulting was clear and easy to read. We were able to share the results with staff and refer to the elements regularly, which showed staff that we were serious about improving staff wellbeing. With her guidance and support, we feel confident sharing the data with staff and working with our staff to create a common language and approach to managing our key stresses. Adrienne has a warm and inviting approach. She listens intently and actively to understand the needs of the school. I would highly recommend Adrienne Hornby Consulting to help with your School Staff Wellbeing needs.

What we can offer is a proven process that’s been administered in a number of schools, working with diverse staff and their specific needs, and using previous results from other schools to shape the solutions to your specific requirements.

Staff surveys take expertise, time and energy to craft and develop

Don’t spend time trawling the internet searching for existing surveys or questions to put into Survey Monkey.

Time is of the essence, and you want to present a product to your staff that shows you’re taking the process seriously, with the right questions.

Our survey has been expertly developed and tested on over 65 schools.

Some surveys don’t identify the actual issues affecting school wellbeing and culture, and take too long to receive results

Identifying issues affecting staff wellbeing and school culture is an art. It’s not just about finding themes that make an impactful difference, it’s understanding how issues are trending and what’s worked before (or not, in some cases!). And, your plans to address your findings have to be relevant to your school and staff to have maximum effect.

Our survey has 80 questions in varying formats, giving you comprehensive information, and staff results and responses can be reviewed instantaneously.

We review results without bias or judgement and make recommendations that get results

Unfortunately, when we’re close to an issue it’s hard for us to see different perspectives and ways forward. An impartial review of the data with observations and recommendations can be highly beneficial, especially when some staff are more receptive to an independent team providing advice.

Let our experienced team review your data, compare it with other schools, provide a comprehensive analysis and deliver tailored recommendations designed to propel your school forward. Just upgrade to our Comparison or Comprehensive survey package.

Engaging genuinely with staff will lead to long-lasting results

Leaving staff out of the equation will hinder the progress and growth you’re seeking to implement. But it takes time to genuinely engage with staff and you’re usually time poor.

Following this process, you can work with your staff to ensure they’re consulted and updated throughout the process, and can contribute honestly to establishing and putting in place wellbeing action plans that impact them and others.

Our survey’s insightful and research-backed questions provide you with the exact answers you’ve long been searching for. Becoming your guide to better decision-making and empowering you to drive positive change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question? We can answer it!
How long does it take to see results from the survey?

Surveying your staff is the first and most important step you should take when wanting to cultivate a change in school culture. However, it’s not the last. The Staff Wellbeing Survey will reveal valuable insights about the current state of wellbeing at your school and what areas need improvement.

It’s what you do with this information that will determine how quickly you see results. But don’t worry, you’re not alone in this. Our DIY Survey PDF Guide will not only walk you through a successful survey process, it will also instruct you on how to review your results with staff and how to respond to the findings. If you choose the Survey + Comparison Report + Data Analysis and Recommendations package, you will also receive expert guidance from our team on exactly what solutions and strategies to focus on next.

With lifetime access to the survey, you will also have the opportunity to re-administer it in 6 months or a year from now to evaluate if change has in fact occurred by comparing the data to the first survey you ran.

Change is a process that takes time, and it requires a high level of commitment from your whole school to make it happen. Remember, we are aiming for long-term change here, not just band-aid solutions.

How do you ensure the anonymity and privacy of staff members when using the survey?

The survey does not ask staff to identify themselves by name or email and asks very limited identifying questions. Generally, we like to identify individuals by their roles only (ie. leader, administrator or teacher). In some cases where schools have multiple campuses or departments, they may want to also identify which campus or department the staff member is in, as this can help pinpoint differences in staff wellbeing and leadership across departments. These questions are optional, however, and staff do not need to provide a response if they prefer not to.

Our surveys are also set up inside ‘Google Forms.’ Google Forms offers a robust set of security features to protect the data you collect. The encryption, access control, and two-factor authentication mechanisms, among others, contribute to making Google Forms a safe tool for data collection and sharing, provided it is used responsibly by the school.

How do you encourage staff involvement and buy-in during the survey process?

Of course, you want as many staff to participate as possible, but the reality is there will always be a small group of staff who choose to opt-out. The best way to encourage involvement is to present this survey as a doorway to change.

To support you, our Staff Survey PDF Guide includes an introductory video from us which explains the purpose, benefits and instructions for completing the survey. This inclusion makes it feel like we are there with you every step of the way and sometimes the guidance of someone external (even if it’s via video) shows your staff that this process is different to initiatives they have engaged with in the past. We will also provide you with email templates to send to staff to make introducing the survey as easy as possible for you.

From the school, it’s important for staff to know they will be involved in every step of the process – from taking the survey to reviewing the results with the leadership team to giving input into what actions should be taken next. Letting them know this is a collaborative project and that you genuinely value their opinion is crucial for earning buy-in.

Do you provide support or guidance for interpreting the survey results?

Absolutely! Whether you choose one of the DIY options or our most comprehensive package, which includes a thorough data analysis and recommendations, you will feel confident you know what to do next. For the DIY options, we provide a detailed PDF guide that includes videos explaining the whole survey process, including how to interpret your results.

Can we see a sample of the survey questions before committing?

To protect our intellectual property, we are unable to share all the questions ahead of purchase. We do understand that some schools might want to see if the questions are going to be suitable for their needs. We have created a quick tour video that you can view on the service page or by clicking this link.

If you would like a more personalised tour of the survey sections and to ask any questions, please feel free to book a 30 minute Clarity Call with a member of the team and we will be happy to help you.

Is this survey suitable for both primary and secondary schools?

Yes! This survey is suitable for any academic institution looking to improve staff wellbeing and school culture.

The survey questions are fully editable also. This means you can change any wording to best represent your setting in a way that makes sense to the staff in your school.

What is the turnaround time for receiving survey results and analysis?

We pride ourselves on the quick turnaround of survey results. With all three package options, you will be able to see the survey results in real-time as staff complete it. Simply toggle to the “Responses” tab of your survey, and you will be able to view staff answers in visual graphs.

The Staff Survey PDF guide contains all the instructions you need to review your results via Google Forms in real time and upon completion of your survey.

The turnaround time for the DIY Survey + Comparison Report package is currently approx. 2 weeks after the close date of your survey.

For the Survey+ Comparison Report + Data Analysis and Recommendations package, the turnaround time depends on when your survey closes and when we can schedule processing of your data on our end. We endeavour to have reports generated and returned to schools within 4 weeks of their close date, but this depends on how many schools are booked in each term. We schedule our reviews in order of purchases.

Will we have access to the raw data?

Yes! You can export the raw data right from the Google Survey into an Excel spreadsheet. Your Staff Survey PDF Guide includes all the instructions for you to access and download your data yourself.

Can we review and break data down across roles or areas of the school for further analysis?

Yes! All you need to do is ensure you include the question asking respondents their role title or which area/department/campus they work on. Our Staff Wellbeing Survey PDF Guide provides you with the instructions for this.

The Survey+ Comparison Report + Data Analysis and Recommendations package has this data breakdown included for staff roles. Other areas/departments/campus data can be ordered at an additional cost.

For those purchasing the DIY Staff Survey or DIY Staff Survey + Comparison Report package, our team can provide you with the data breakdown at an extra cost. You can add this on at the time of purchase or email us at hello@adriennehornby.com.au to request this additional service at any time.

Do you provide ongoing support for implementing action plans based on survey results?

This is something I only offer in my signature program, The Well-Led Schools Partnership Program. Over 12 months, I partner with schools to develop a Staff Wellbeing Action Plan while engaging leaders, teachers, and staff in helpful training sessions designed to empower everyone with essential tools and skills they need to contribute toward a happy and healthy school culture.

Doors to the program are currently closed until 2024, but the survey is the first step in the program anyway.

If you’re interested in the Well-Led Schools Partnership, one of our survey packages is a great place to start!

Times have changed. Today, in the education sector, the need to prioritise staff wellbeing and school culture is more pertinent than ever.

Staff Development Workshop

But why take action now?

It’s timely because:

  • Wellbeing is isn’t an add on to school culture – it’s woven and central
  • The shortage of teachers is making schools with integrated wellbeing practices and strong school cultures more attractive and empowering their staff.
  • Staff mental health and wellbeing has been shown to influence student’s mental health and wellbeing, leading to high engagement and improved student outcome
  • Wellbeing challenges are not getting better with time. In fact, in some cases, they’re festering because they’re not dealt with immediately. With the evidence-based information from the survey and reports, you can be confident to take immediate action.
  • While there are schools that are less affected than others, it’s because they’re been investing in their people’s wellbeing and built people-centric cultures

Don’t let another term go by without taking action!
